Charlotte, NC (July 26 , 2024) – In front of family and friends north of the border, Nick d’Orlando took to the streets of Toronto, Ontario, Canada for the fifth round of the Radical Cup North America series. Entering the weekend leading the drivers’ championship in the Pro 1500 class, d’Orlando continues to impress with a triple podium performance, including his fifth victory of the season in his #3 Priority Technology Holdings/Rising Star Racing/Flatrock Motorclub SR3 machine.
A bumpy and narrow concrete wall lined street circuit typically presents a very challenging environment in normal circumstances but adding a record-setting 39 car field, consisting of four different classes, turned the competition to survival mode and a lesson in good decision making. Thanks to the support of his team at Radical Indianapolis/Graham Rahal Performance, and the focus of a well season-veteran, d'Orlando tackled the weekend wonderfully.
d’Orlando got off to a slow start due to some unexpected car adjustments in the one and only practice session on Friday morning but a quick recovery followed with a fifth-in-class qualifying effort that afternoon. Albeit disappointed with the starting position, he made quick work moving up to the third position in the opening laps of Race 1 later that evening, where he played it out until the safety car was deployed and ended the race under caution, earning his 10th podium result of the season.
The start of Race 2 on Saturday was a little chaotic at the start with some confusion amongst the field. A communication issue lead to conflicting race conditions in the opening corners resulting in a series of higher-powered SR10s to move forward under what seemed to be caution conditions. This had a dramatic effect on d’Orlando’s off-pole starting position that prevented him from making any further progress. He maintained his position for a second place finish in-class throughout the event, ultimately with an impressive track record setting lap time. Unfortunately, a post-race penalty would set him back to officially seventh.,
Looking for redemption from the pole position for Race 3 on Sunday, he would bring home his fifth victory of the season despite the series of passing attempts from behind during the last-lap dash to end the race that only consisted of seven laps of racing under green flag conditions.
“Toronto has been a track I was looking forward to all season long. Street race experience is hard to get and it’s a very different style of racing.” explains d’Orlando. “We started out on our back foot with very little track time in the practice session and that caused us to have to play catchup but the entire GRP team kept pushing hard and working together to take strides forward throughout the weekend and ultimately bring home the victory in the final race. Leading into the weekend, our only goal was to bring the #3 Priority/Rising Star Racing car home every session guaranteeing we bring in valuable championship points. I’m very happy that we did just that, especially with the awesome amount of Radical cars out there. Now I’m really looking forward to the season finale at Sonoma in September.”
d'Orlando continues to be the highest ranking rookie in the Radical Cup North America’s combined field of three classes (SR10, SR3 Pro1500 and SR 1340) of over 44 competitors and currently sits second is his SR3 Pro 1500 class just 6 points behind the leader in the Drivers’ Championship. The sixth and final round of the series will commence in Sonoma, CA on September 27-28, 2024 for the penultimate event.
